Using a globe to visualise earth's data

Tangible Earth's designer Shinichi Takkemura was motivated by his belief that 2D maps and traditional globes are limited tools for understanding, and fail to convey "the exceptional beauty and dynamism of our planet". Using near-real-time data feeds, his globe is a huge, spherical touch-screen, whose display you can rotate with your hands, and select which facets you wish to see (cloud-coverage, day/night line, seasonal changes in ocean temperatures, biodiversity, migration patterns). Words do little justice to the final effect: watch this video to see it all come alive.
