Over three million Swedes are trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but few get the opportunity to contribute their knowledge in real life. SMS-lifesavers is a unique project which uses mobile technology to alert volunteers trained in CPR to a cardiac arrest in their immediate vicinity, in order to increase the proportion of patients who receive CPR while waiting for an ambulance.
The SMS-lifesavers system is active in the entire county of Stockholm and is now linked to the Swedish defibrillator register. By using mobile positioning, volunteer lifesavers near a suspected cardiac arrest are alerted to perform CPR and also to retrieve the nearest defibrillator via a link to the Swedish Heart Starts Register.
