Oxfam, through Cambodian partner Women for Prosperity, gave 45 Khmer women on their economic empowerment programmes mobile phones in June 2010 to speed up meeting coordination. The women, who had never sent an SMS before, used the phones for far more powerful reasons: to get market prices of farming products, notice of storms and protect their rights in matters such as domestic violence. Phones were made pink to deter men in the village from requisitioning them.
