MIT has developed a single sensor that can monitor exactly how much power is being used by every appliance, lighting fixture and device in the home, with pinpoint accuracy and at low cost.

The sensor is actually an array of five sensors, all offset so that their readings come from different directions. The differences between these readings are used to determine which sensor is getting the strongest reading. The result is a system that can give the user highly detailed information about their current electricity use, as well as letting them zoom in on spikes in the past to see what caused them. All data stays inside the user’s home, eliminating privacy concerns.
