NHS Direct was the English National Health Service’s health advice and information arm, with 1.2 million visitors monthly. It pioneered remote assessment, and delivery of advice and information, by providing web-based symptom checkers to help home diagnosis, guide self-care, direct users to other services, and request a phone call or web chat with clinicians. All content was available via an app for iPhone and Android, and was backed up by 24/hour phone-lines. The service was folded into NHS Choices in March 2014.
