Making it easy to share and download songs in MP3 without paying record company royalties.

Napster is a now-defunct, peer-to-peer, free audio file sharing service that at its peak had 80 million registered users. It made it easy to share and download songs in MP3 without paying record company royalties (and some used it to access music that was otherwise difficult to obtain: old releases, unreleased or bootleg recordings). It represented a huge threat to the music industry's modus operandi and revenues, and although it was eventually shut down due to copyright infringement it left the music business irrevocably changed.
