Creating the first free and open digital map of urban slums.By Map Kibera Trust
Kibera is Nairobi's and Africa’s largest urban slum, with a population of up to two million. Until recently, however, it was a blank on the digital map. In November 2009, a few months after the Kenyan government began its slum clearance programme there, Kibera’s young residents launched the first free and open digital map of their community. It has grown into a complete and interactive community information project. An Economist article recently dubbed Kibera ‘[possibly] the most entrepreneurial place on the planet’.
