This environmental Artificial Intelligence project is led by IBM's China Research Laboratory.
It will tap into the company's 12 global research labs as well as creating an innovation ecosystem of partners from government, academia, industry and private enterprise.
It focuses on three critical areas for China's sustainable growth:
- Air quality management
- Renewable energy forecasting
- Energy optimisation for industry
It uses machine learning, data collection and mathematical modelling to predict the most accurate forecasts for how air pollution propagates, as well as what renewable energies would be most successful.
Such forecasts could soon help authorities make environmentally informed decisions about closing factories or limiting the number of drivers on roads, all in order to reduce pollution to an acceptable level.
