India has some of the most impressive elite institutions of higher education, especially the Indian Institutes of Technology. Yet still only a tiny minority of people make it to university, and of those many go to universities with second-rate teaching and facilities.

EduKart is an Indian online education platform, based in New Delhi, offering a range of free and paid-for academic courses, ranging from short certifications up to full degrees, for those who cannot afford higher education but want to take short courses to improve their job prospects.

A range of short certification courses and also degree programmes are offered online through the website, drawing on content from partner institutions around the world. The site also includes features such as mock examinations, weekend webinars and alumni meet-ups to build the community.

About 8,000 students have enrolled on free and paid-for courses since the launch in November 2011.
