Learning critical creative skills online from leading tutors.
Formal, mainstream education is catching up with the digital and communications revolution, making lectures and classes available through massive open online courses. But what of the more practical skills and know-how people need once they are out of college and making their way in an industry?
CreativeLive is a new model for people to learn critical creative skills online by watching free-to-air streamed video presentations from leading tutors in their field. It started in the field of creative industries – the intersection of design, photography and technology. But it could be applicable and spread to many other occupations and sectors.
Through CreativeLive someone who wants to learn about digital photography, animation software or marketing and sales can watch industry experts explaining their ideas and experience in photography, business, software, design, video and film.
Viewers can ask questions and connect with other course participants via Twitter. The lectures can then be bought to download, with supplementary materials.
CreativeLive is a sign of how large the untapped market is for independent, self-organising study. Since 2010 CreativeLive has clocked up more than ten million “viewing hours”, with a catalogue of around 400 classes available to buy.
