A car sharing scheme that prevents the release of millions of pounds of carbon each year.
City Carshare was the first car-sharing programme to launch in the San Francisco Bay area, in 2001. It is now the largest non-profit car-sharing scheme in the United States, and is in place in Oakland, Berkeley and Palo Alto. By leasing fuel-efficient electric vehicles by the hour, it prevents an estimated 25 million pounds of carbon from being released into the atmosphere each year. It was founded by transport activists and NGOs.
