Detecting landmines using a water jerry can and an Arduino processor

There are many millions of active landmines affecting the lives of 1.5 billion people across the world.
Using off-the-shelf components and an Arduino microprocessor, CANNY is turning a commonly found water jerry can into a landmine detection tool. Its modular pod of sensors has a metal detector, a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and a sensor for vapours from explosives. This unique combination ensures detection of metal, plastic and even wooden landmines.
It also contains:
- a cartridge to mark the location of detected landmines
- a first aid kit
- water to fight a top challenge of de-miners – dehydration.
CANNY is designed to be attached onto a variety of different mediums, depending on the context.
Bibak started a pilot of CANNY in 2015 in Afghanistan.
