Microbeads are added to many personal care products. They cannot be filtered out at wastewater treatment plants so end up in the marine food chain. More of these microbeads are being phased out by manufacturers in favour of bio-degradable alternatives, but some care products still have them in.

Beat the Microbead is a smartphone app that quickly tells you if a personal care product has invisible plastic microbeads in it. You scan a barcode and it gives a traffic light colour code depending on whether the product contains them.

The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) called it one of the most efficient and successful campaigns, and the Beat the Microbead app has already been downloaded over 100,000 times.
