Agoraphobia, with or without panic disorder, affects an estimated 3-6% of the population. In the UK this represents around 3 million individuals. Depending on severity the treatment may require ongoing one-to-one therapy based in the person's home and escorting the person around the surrounding area. This is extremely costly so it tends not to be provided. Agoraphobia Free tackles this by using virtual therapeutic tools.
Agoraphobia Free replicates the two parts that make up traditional treatment and puts these into the hands of sufferers via their phones or tablets. There is therefore very little or no intervention from support staff or therapists.
The team is made up of a small but growing group of game designers who know how powerful games can be. They believe that games can make some forms of therapy more fun, accessible and affordable. Their goal is to empower people with tools to take control of their own experiences.
Agoraphobia Free see their Stress Free and Phobia Free projects as 'springboards'. Their ultimate goal is to develop games to provide access to affordable and effective treatments to all that need them.
