A smart healthcare solution for the diagnosis and monitoring of epilepsyBy BioSerenity
Epilepsy is a chronic brain disorder that affects 50 million people worldwide, and is one of the most common neurological diseases globally. To diagnose it, a seizure must be recorded while a patient is hooked up to an electroencephalography machine, a process that can be stressful and time-consuming. Even then, diagnosis can only be confirmed after a patient has had at least two seizures. It is especially difficult to confirm diagnosis because other conditions such as migraines and panic attacks can cause similar symptoms.
French start-up BioSerenity is working with the Brain and Spine Institute (ICM) at the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital in Paris on a smart healthcare solution for the diagnosis and monitoring of epilepsy.
Neuronaut is a long-sleeved t-shirt and skull-cap embedded with biometric sensors that feed information to the patient’s smartphone. This data is then uploaded to the cloud for detailed analysis. Patients can wear the Neuronaut smart-clothing at home, meaning their daily lives don’t have to be interrupted. The results are more accurate as the monitoring period is not limited to a few hours spent in a hospital, and a firm diagnosis can be made in a matter of days or weeks instead of potentially years, allowing doctors to give appropriate treatment faster than ever.
Gathered data will be anonymised and shared with researchers from ICM to help the medical community gain a better insight into the disease, thus improving research on epilepsy and the future of diagnostics.
BioSerenity won first place at the 2014 International Innovation Awards for the project. Their next step is to develop a system that predicts when seizures are likely to happen – a technology that would completely transform the life of epilepsy sufferers.
